Hand built platter in black grogged clay with hakeme accent - James T Smith
James is a multidisciplinary artist who primarily works with ceramics, creating both functional and ornamental pieces inspired by Japanese design aesthetics. His creations are marked by a juxtaposition of sharp, minimalist lines against organic textures, employing a limited palette of earthy hues alongside the natural beauty of unglazed clay.
Through his continuous exploration and production, James seeks to navigate the interplay between utility and artistry, tradition and modernity, ensuring each piece stands out as a distinct work of art.
Hand built platter in black grogged clay with hakeme accent
Dive into the dark and moody with these striking pieces crafted from heavily grogged black clay, accentuated with Hakeme white slip details. Hakeme refers to a brush stroke technique in Japanese pottery, traditionally involving the use of white slip applied with a coarse grass brush to create decorative surface patterns. Predominantly slab-built using plaster moulds, each piece showcases an organic, hand-crafted aesthetic.
The creation process begins with rolling out the clay using a slab roller, then draping it over a plaster hump mould. This technique, aided by specific potters' plastic that draws out moisture and hardens the clay faster, gives the pieces their unique form. Excess clay is torn off to achieve an organic rim, adding to the rugged texture.
With its uniform shape and defined foot, it represents the balance between meticulous crafting and raw artistry. The heavily grogged texture, achieved by adding pre-fired ceramic particles, enhances the structural integrity and tactile quality of these ceramics.
