Architectural Carved Dish with Oxide Wash & Dolomite Glaze - James T Smith
James is a multidisciplinary artist who primarily works with ceramics, creating both functional and ornamental pieces inspired by Japanese design aesthetics. His creations are marked by a juxtaposition of sharp, minimalist lines against organic textures, employing a limited palette of earthy hues alongside the natural beauty of unglazed clay.
Through his continuous exploration and production, James seeks to navigate the interplay between utility and artistry, tradition and modernity, ensuring each piece stands out as a distinct work of art.
Architectural Carved Dish with Oxide Wash & Dolomite Glaze
Each bowl starts its journey on the wheel, before being carefully marked and measured. James sketches the design directly onto the clay, then carves away to reveal the final form. A wash of iron oxide brings out the rich texture of the piece, settling into the grooves and accentuating every detail. The bowl is finished with an oatmeal dolomite glaze, providing a beautiful contrast and a touch of elegance.
